404 error after redirect to webapp jsp page

trying to troubleshoot a 404 error, want to see if shibboleth could cause
this or  is it apache webserver and tomcat.

We are seeing the SAML Response XML from IDP and at the end it does this
2013-03-27 15:04:17 DEBUG Shibboleth.SSO.SAML2 [1]:ACS returning via
redirect to: https://servername/webapp/federatedsso.jsp

and then it gives a 404 error  on the url
https://servername/webapp/Shibboleth.sso/SAML2/POST

did  $ curl -k https://servername/webapp/Shibboleth.sso/Status
it gives the <StatusHandler> XML and it looks ok.

can shibboleth cause a 404 error after the redirect to the resource, or is
it something in the webserver.
if shib is turned off, https://servername/webapp/federatedsso.jsp works
fine.
