Implementing Salesforce SSO with Shibboleth

I've been following the leads and I think that what I actually need to do is to have OpenSSO (or other implementation such as OpenAM) as my IdP, which will perform SSO against Salesforce. 
My spring application will use OpenSSO as its authentication provider.

I hope I'm on the right track...

Provided you're happy with cookie-like security properties. I think server access to a REST API should aim higher than that, and I don't think OAuth will ever get there.
