Shib IdP -- first experience, idp startup error

Greetings,

 I am extremely new to this product, and am still wading through documentation and playing with the "quickinstall".
I am following the quickinstall instructions here:

Once installed, I found that the first test fails: 
https://mysite/idp/profile/Metadata/SAML  with a 404.
So, I opened the catalina log file:
	SEVERE: Error listenerStart
	Jun 19, 2013 1:54:58 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
	SEVERE: Context [/idp] startup failed due to previous errors

So, then I opened the localhost log file:

SEVERE: Exception sending context initialized event to listener instance of class org.springframework.web.context.ContextLoaderListener
org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'shibboleth.AttributeResolver': Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is edu.internet2.middleware.shibboleth.common.service.ServiceException: Configuration was not loaded for shibboleth.AttributeResolver service, error creating components.

[truncated because the thrown error is 50+ lines long]


This is my first experience with  Tomcat, but I think I followed the instructions, and fulfilled the data requirements on the installer acceptably.
Is anyone familiar with what the issue might be?  I am using the latest JRE 7 (v25).
