Shibboleth integration XpressConnect ?

Our network group is starting to use XpressConnect for assisted configuration of client devices for use of Eduroam (installing a client certificate on the device used for RADIUS authentication).

The previous in-house service has been protected by Shibboleth, but I'm told that XpressConnect relies on "LDAP authentication." 

My question is whether anyone has successfully protected XpressConnect with Shibboleth, say by putting it behind a protected web gateway and passing an environment variable, or using ECP profile, or …?
