Metadata Invalid at time of acquisition

We see this ever now and then on our SP servers:


2013-06-10 12:18:41 ERROR OpenSAML.MetadataProvider.XML : metadata
instance was invalid at time of acquisition
2013-06-10 12:18:41 CRIT OpenSAML.Metadata.Chaining : failure
initializing MetadataProvider: Metadata instance was invalid at time
of acquisition.


That's it, just the two lines. No other error or warning, and the site
access seems to be working.
However it does cause concern with one or two clients that show some
real performance issues when this exception is thrown. But still, the
access and the pages work.

In this SP, the Metadata is not Federated anywhere so it is stored
locally. So what is this error trying to tell us? How does Metadata
become invalid, and yet still work?
