Yes, it's expected, and it handles it badly, like every other error
condition. You get a template with an error on it that no user would know
what to do with. Or you have to turn on error redirections and catch them
with a script, but there's not much bandwidth to communicate the situation
to the script.

The downside of my attitude about application integration is that it's
impossible for middleware to intelligently handle protocol failures.
