Trying to connect SP to IDP

My colleague built a shibboleth test environment consisting of an SP and IDP on Centos and it is operational.  He is out on leave and we are trying to build a similar environment and this time document the process.  We have built both SP and IDP, but when it came down to do testing connectivity, I am getting the following when trying to connect from the SP

shibsp::ListenerException at (https://spt.qatar-med.cornell.edu/secure)
Cannot connect to shibd process

The shibd_warn.log file has the following warnings:

Both SP and IDP are installed on Centos 6.4 64 bit.
Our collective knowledge of the application is very limited so your patients is greatly appreciated.
