Shibboleth Service Provider Update brought Apache Tomcat silently down

For the sake of completeness:

The Tomcat is not using APR (its startup message tells me to use it  
for better performance,
so I can be sure). I also have not included OpenSSL in the build, as  
far as I can see
(for Tomcat, I just installed and configured the binary distribution, for the
Shibboleth Software stack I have not included explicit references to openssl).
