Shibboleth Service Provider Update brought Apache Tomcat silently down

I have a strange observation on the installation of Shibboleth-SP-2.4.3:

Our environment is Apache httpd-2.4.7, communicating via the
ajp-protocol to Apache tomcat-7.0.47,
running on SLES 11 SP 2.

Before the Upgrade, Shibboleth-SP-2.4.2 was installed and running.

I configured Shibboleth-SP-2.4.3, made it, and made install. I stopped
the apache httpd and started it anew.

The strange observation is, that apache-tomcat (which should not be
affected by the whole procedure)
stopped working at that time without leaving traces in the logs (so it
wasn't a normal shutdown, and there is also no error trace there).

Has anyone seen a similar behaviour?
