Shibboleth as an IDP or SP

We have a similar setup - the short answer is it's an IdP.
I don't know much about how all the Microsoft server products work but Office 365 goes to our ADFS server for authentication, which delegates to the Shib IdP.

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. I am new to
Shibboleth. I am in the process of setting it us as a IDP. I currently
have ADFSv2 as what I think is my SP. I am new to that as well. I was
tasked with this job duty and I don't have much experience in it. We have a
Sharepoint server for our student information system. In the sharepoint
portal, there is a web part that does SSO to OFfice 365 but the user has to
authenticate and have a SAML token. So I setup ADFS and have that working.
But we ran into a problem with forcing password change at first login and
self-service password changes. So I did some reading and some people are
saying that they are doing it using both Shibboleth and ADFS. Problem is,
they didn't say if they setup Shibboleth as a IDP or as the SP. I am
thinking as the IDP but I don't want to spend a lot of time trying to set it
up and figure it out if that is not correct. Does anyone know if that would
be correct?
Thanks
Joe
