I will mention that I've had success with both the Global Catalog and standard LDAP ports in different IdP implementations. AD is weird.

I've been curious about the progress of the ldaptive project. I'm pretty sure I was taking a look at it for some CAS-related purpose, but I don't remember. I will take another look and send you a note if I end up testing it.
