Shibb & Moodle 2.3

A campus group is deploying Moodle (v 2.3).  I want to facilitate their reliance on our Shibboleth IdP rather than LDAP authN.
As neither of us have experience with Moodle, I'm soliciting wisdom of those experienced.  The Moodle.org web site indicates 
long-standing integration of Shibboleth, but at first glance does not reference generating metadata which leads me to wonder
if the service submits un-signed authN request to the IdP or relies on signed or encrypted SAML response.  
Hope I've missed something obvious.
