Thanks, all, this is a big help as well as some good advice.

For sanity purposes, I totally agree this is a rather hideous idea, but for what we need to accomplish here, it might be the only sane way to make the needed transition. I'm still working on better ideas; I hope we can get everything loaded into the new metadata source before we make the switch. If not, though, we'll do this temporarily, and we'll hope that it's very temporarily.

Absolutely.  Further, I'm not sure that this is guarantee behavior (although it is a leitmotif in the code), so while you can
probably rely on it for this major release I would echo Peter's comment about not recommended.
