I'm happy to inform you that EBSCO just got back to me and the
discovery interface has been fixed (the implementation itself had
already been upgraded later this year) and will now work with SAML2 as
well. The change meant (in their words):

  "to recognize SAML2 over SAML1 (though both are still valid types)"

Worked just fine for me, via SAML2. Thanks EBSCO!
