bad version number in class file

I am trying to run DiscoveryService 1.2.1 in tomcat.  I am having a
problem with the version number.  When starting up tomcat, I get the
following error in catalina.out:

 

SEVERE: Exception invoking periodic operation:

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Bad version number in .class
file (unable to load class
edu.internet2.middleware.shibboleth.wayf.WayfService)

 

Tomcat is running under version 1.5.0_06.  Does the discovery service
require a different version?  What version of Java was it compiled
under?
