On the contrary, it's been difficult to get a stable build with gcc
historically and only Sun's compiler has been supported for many years.
Within the last decade, though, Sun's compiler has become outdated and gcc
has become much more standard.
I expect the recommended compiler may change with 2.5 because Sun's
standard library will no longer work with Shibboleth, but the answer on
Solaris is always "it depends" because the use of gcc is dependent on
where it comes from and how it was built. It works better now than before
because there are more open source channels for it than before that do a
sound job getting it built.
