They must have a bug in their script and instead of simply adding that
extra flag to the CFLAGS reported by apxs, they're embedding it into the
CC variable. So when my script does the compare to try and flag anomalies
it looks unusual to it.

I don't know what the implications of mixing code always are, that's why
it's programmed to report mismatches and make the person building it
responsible. I doubt that mixing C++ code and C code compiled at that
standard level would be an issue. You can certainly pass that flag in
CFLAGS to get it set, but practically speaking, none of the SP is compiled
with gcc anyway and that flag doesn't apply to g++, so I wouldn't worry
much about it.
