Hmm, perhaps I misunderstand how ECP works? I thought it required 
explicit client support. Doesn't the client need to play assertion 
middleman between the server and the idp? I had the (again perchance 
mistaken) impression that the actual username/password was never given 
to the server?

We already have some web services doing basic auth, so I don't have any 
initial reservations on that front.
