I've never tested the SP, but it's not supposed to be something I need to
support explicitly, it should "just work".

The IdP may or may not support this, it's not really clear. The main
reason the IdP consumes its own metadata now is because of the requirement
to obtain the artifact endpoint index to stick in the artifact already.
It's possible that with some creative configuration it would work now.
