I ended up with something I could live with, but we're not close to
production yet, so I haven't fully analyzed it.

I avoid anything that involves touching WAR files, it just depends on your
comfort. I use a shell script CGI. I can send it along if you like, maybe
another set of eyes would spot issues with it.
