Oracle (well, BEA) provided mod_wl (as in "weblogic") for that, IIRC
but I have no idea how to pass envvars though that (or how it
interacts with mod_shib, if mod_wl still even exists).

Yes. Still preferable to trying to get SAML to work (and keep things
working over releases) in Weblogic, I suppose.
