Isn't it still the case that the code gets one shot at building the gauges? It's going to just omit them from the system if the initial service load fails, right?

I think that's ok, but I'd turn up the warnings on that and make sure it doesn't just say that on debug. It looked like it would be pretty silent in those cases but I'll test it.
