Thanks all, that fits in with what I thought I was seeing and also answers several questions I didn't know I have

As someone coming to this for the first time whilst armed with a compiler I would say indubitably.  It solves any number of issues about encoding - all of which are easily solvable but require research and thought.  Slam out the SHA1, lower case it if needed, job done.  I would almost think of always doing that.
