I'm not versed in the full breadth of the Java API, but I'd have thought that a Map would suffice.  The synchronization might get a bit tricky round the edges, but I have a manic distrust of packages which profess to help and lack details of the precise semantics, so I'd just grow my own.  I'll help you if you want (like I said on the phone, I spend large chunks of my other life worrying about these things).  And I know that Scott is good for review of asynch subsystems...
