Custom authentication web flow

Hello,
   I believe with external authentication flow , the normal shibboleth login page will be displayed for the user to log in and authentication will be handled by external code.  If we have to show a custom login page with external authentication, wouldn't it be better to write a custom authentication web flow?  Can you please advise on the effort to write a custom authentication web flow?  Is there any documentation available on writing custom authentication flows for the IdP?
