External authentication

Hi,
  With reference to the document
    https://wiki.shibboleth.net/confluence/display/IDP30/ExternalAuthnConfiguration

If the external resource is a servlet, its path can be set on the shibboleth.authn.External.externalAuthnPath bean.
In the servlet everything under the Inputs section can be read from the HttpRequest.
How is the output expected?
How should the items listed under the Outputs section passed back to the IdP?
