With git you have the freedom to create a branch from _any_ point in
repository history, which allows creating a branch from the exact same
commit as a tagged release. That provides the freedom to branch only when
the need arises to apply critical fixes. It's a commonplace and
straightforward workflow that I've personally done several times for
critical fixes on top of a point release.

There's no way around this once in a multiple branch situation. But late
branching can reduce the likelihood.
