I'm expecting to address at least part of this in IDP-775, but my aim is to
minimise the code changed in IDP, and to make the changes down stream.  But
'/' - '\' needs to die at the same time.  It’s a config/installer issue (and
when I added that code we didn't have an installer).

Agreed.  I think this has to be fixed in the installer. Which  I extend to
mean "making the testbed more widely applicable to developers".
