I would say that neither testing out native metadata syntax or adding 
Spring hooks for things like custom filters is too essential right now. As 
I said earlier, a good 3.1 addition would probably be a Spring hook for 
all the xsi:type plug points, to make it easier for people to write 
extensions without writing Spring parser code, which has always been a 
hassle for people.
