Very much +1, of course something will need to be hardwired, but in Windows
it will be the registry parameters for the service (a well understood
concept) and I guess Unixen will have some sort of equivalent..

Me neither. I'll register a minor concern with IDP_HOME, in that it might
cause confusion with previous installations where IDP_HOME had to be set as
an environment variable, but I'm not sure that this is not a pretty bogus
concern.
