The first part is pretty much generally interesting and in particular it
asks how we intend dealing with "conf" and upgrades (on all platforms)
moving forward.  I'd like to get this bottomed out soon.  Other questions
are about metadata,

The last part is pretty windows specific and becomes rather more vague,
reflecting how little I have got into the details.

Any comments, here or as notes, would be welcome
