As an extra element of bizarreness - there is also the magical post
processor to force ids.  Since this is within a service it could well be
that the post processors are not being set up for the application context
that is used.

I can make no sense of the evidence so far.  I'll spend some time checking
that the spring dependencies are set correctly (several of the services do
depend upon each other).  Marvin, could you make your change configuration -
or at least enough of it to force this bug - available?
