Yes, I think the discussion was more around whether to use it any place we don't already, but that presupposes a new custom schema which we're hoping to avoid for now anyway.
That said, if we needed to "convert" config files using xsi:type to a new form without, that's an easy xslt job. The sort of thing that can be done reliably. But is it worth it? Probably not so much at this stage.
