My apologies, I actually meant schema validation (which V2 does, and V3
doesn't- yet).  This of course does bring as a side effect all that stuff
about filling in defaults, but I hope that our schemas are default free -
and certainly I would imagine that by now our code doesn’t make those sorts
of assumptions.

I think I see what you mean.  To be honest I think the issue is more that
there are two different semantics, rather than deciding which one we want to
implement, so to my mind the easiest clarification is avoidance.
