Okay, I am not that familiar with the virtual host configs.

I added user git with a couple of git-svn cloned repositories at
/home/git/<project> so that

 git clone http://[git|svn].shibboleth.net/<project>

would be the public url following instructions here :

http://git-scm.com/book/en/Git-on-the-Server-Public-Access

Also, I built git to /opt/git. Whatever packages I found were outdated
or involved adding yet another package repository.
