Thanks.  That's very interesting, and I'll try and take a look at it tomorrow.

Can you raise a JIRA case on this at http://issues.shibboleth.net please?  Attach as many of the files in question as you can; obviously I won't ask for the private key but the input file and the serialised unsigned intermediate and both corresponding signed files would be a great help, as well as the bean configuration you posted here earlier.
