documentation on process/flow-control wrt configuration files

Appreciate if anyone can point me to what would be the parameters (such as
$IDP_HOME$)
and any other affected xml files that are changed (configured before) while
building IDP.war?

Looking for a sort of manual or semi-auto mode.

We also became aware of ant task and build.xml but we are sticking to basic 
distribution compilation as in
http://svn.shibboleth.net/view/java-shib-idp2/branches/REL_2/

Goal is to have the ability to recompile and re-deploy
