There is an obvious fix.</p> <h3 style="margin: 10px 0 0 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.563; margin: 30px 0 0 0"><a name="GrubbyTechnicalDetails" style="color: #3b73af; text-decoration: none"></a>Grubby Technical Details</h3> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The attribute resolver puts the values into a <tt>net.shibboleth.idp.profile.spring.factory.BasicX509CredentialFactoryBean }}via the setter {{setCertificateResource</tt></p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The password flows puts the values into a <tt>net.shibboleth.idp.authn.impl.X509ResourceCredentialConfig</tt> via the setter <tt>setTrustCertificates</tt></p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Both these methods take a single <tt>Resource</tt> as a parameter. The difference is that the resolver ones takes an <tt>org.springframework.core.io.Resource</tt> and the authn ones takes a <tt>net.shibboleth.utilities.java.support.resource.Resource</tt></p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The shibboleth Resource has its own converter to go from string to resource and this leaves the trailing space alone. The Spring resource goes through some incredible horrible conversion <em>while it is still a property</em> which ends up with the spaces being trimmed. </p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I would argue that this is a bug in Spring. I think we have zero change of persuading them of that (even if we spent the extra hours working out exactly when it happens). They have significant installed base and suddenly doing the right thing would break a lot of people.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">In the meantime the obvious fix it to change {{BasicX509CredentialFactoryBean }}to use a Shibboleth Resource (I have confuirmed that tis works - or rather that it breaks) and perhaps do a review for other places where we are using the wrong resource class</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">My questions for any developers watching is</p>
<ol>
<li>The obvious fix seems like it might have some unpleasant side effects. Are we happy for this to be made in 4.1.1 (I am, on the basis that the side effects will be explicable, but OTOH if people have existing idp.attribute.resolver.LDAP.trustCertificates properties set with trailing spaces and/or are not using the LDAP aithn they will die</li>
<li>If (1) then what do we think about looking for this bug elsewhere?</li>
<li>Do you feel I should bottom out exactly where Spring is stripping that trailing space ?</li>
<li>If (3) is it worth telling Spring that this is wrong?</li>
