Short of actual replacement with something else, one option is to look at replacing the serialization layer with something that's self-contained and doesn't rely on an external parser.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">I think some of the field types currently in the code are probably unused and could be stripped out, but assuming they can all be handled, a simple packed structure generated from a depth-first traverse shouldn't be that hard to write.
