It seems there is a persistent connection between mod_shib to shibd. However, when the connection is idle for certain amount of time, LB will break the connection. This causes the connections in the pool held by mod_shib broken. However, when the next request comes, mod_shib tries to reuse the broken sock for communication to shibd. (Line 321 in SocketListener.cpp). In the end, the browser will get "Failure receiving response to remoted message (xxxx)" error message.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0"> </p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">How to replicate:</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">1. setup mod_shib and shibd on different VM</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">2. setup a load balancer/proxy in front of shibd. Point mod_shib to the proxy</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">3. After start apache, wait for load balancer to break the connection</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">4. Issue a request to trigger a communication to shibd, e.g. localhost/Shibboleth.sso/Status</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">5. mod_shib returns the following error message:</p>
