<td class="text-paragraph-pattern-container mobile-resize-text " style="padding: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; padding: 0 0 10px 0"> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0; margin-top: 0">What I can tell from tracing a cookie-backed relay state configuration to observe the internals more easily from the outside is that the server is explicitly reporting the URL path to be "page#one", because the SP encodes the value it sets in the cookie, and that value contains "page%23one".</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The same thing happens with any encoded character that's directly passed in the request line. By the time it reaches the module, Apache has decoded it. But all the module is supposed to do and all it has ever done for 20 years is encode once and then decode once to produce the final redirect afterwards.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I don't really see how this can be fixed unless there's a different request field that contained the original encoded value, and I think that runs into problems with path translation inside the server having happened that I'd be risking undoing.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I was going to verify IIS did the same thing, but I expected it would.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I really don't see what the solution is unless there are APIs that are supposed to be used that retain the original path but without causing other problems.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">There's a fair amount of discussion about this in the context of proxying that lead me to believe Apache at least has always been buggy in this area when it comes to not molesting the request before it's passed through and that the only allowance they ever made was for slashes.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I don't see what kind of algorithm could be safe to use on an already-decoded request to selectively encode only some characters in some places before a full encode step.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I would need to be convinced that there's a trick to this that other modules are performing and find that trick. There are ample alternatives around that should be reference points.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I never would have expected that the server was molesting the value like this.</p> </td>
