Would most obviously be implemented in <tt>FilesystemLoadSaveManager</tt>. There's just a few things to decide.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Not sure whether we should go to the complexity of making the whole thing pluggable say with a strategy <tt>Function</tt>, vs just saying it always works in a particular way, and you just turn it on with a boolean.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The thing that argues for the simpler route is that obviously anyone using the feature will have to know exactly what the strategy is, in order to drop the files in the expected location. A simple fixed strategy if easier to understand and document, I think. And I don't know that making it fully pluggable has any real advantages for the modest scale of a dynamic metadata provider.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Is there any kind of standard or expected way to do the directory hash structure? I think I've only personally seen it with openssl, supporting simple PEM CA cert stores.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">If not, I was thinking a sensible default strategy is:</p>
<ul>
<li>digest the input key (which in this case is typically just the base filename, e.g. foo.xml) with <tt>StringDigester</tt>, using say SHA-1 (or SHA-256?) and lowercase hex output</li>
<li>take the first 2 chars of the hex form as a 1st directory level, the next 2 chars as a 2nd level</li>
<li>the file then lives in that 2nd level directory with its original filename</li>
</ul> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So if the input key/filename is foo.xml, and its hex digest is a7b6ff<snip>, then the location would be computed as baseDir + "a7/b6/foo.xml". (For Unix.. actually use a platform-specific separator per the standard Java constant.)</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">If my math is right - (16*16)*(16*16) = 256^2 = 65,536 - that gives us 64K of second-level directories. Is that enough? Or too many?</p> </td>
