<li>The HC <tt>X509HostnameVerifier</tt> interface itself is exposed all over the place in our APIs (<tt>TLSSocketFactory</tt>,<tt>-Configuration</tt>, <tt>-Parameters</tt>, related support classes).</li>
<li>The actual HC impls that we use have been deprecated, in favor of new ones which just implement the JSSE one.</li>
</ol> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Addressing #1 turns out to be easy to fix, b/c at some point along the way the HC <tt>X509HostnameVerifier</tt> became a sub-interface of the JSSE <tt>HostnameVerifier</tt>. So simply replacing all our references and usage of the former with the latter would seem to be completely safe; we're really just replacing references to a type with its super-type. In the unlikely event anyone had customized a verifier in their config and/or even had written their own impl, it would have to already implement the super-interface. So there shouldn't be any problems. I already have that change prepared, and all tests pass, etc. In my opinion we should go ahead and do this now, for 4.0.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">#2 is easy to do coding-wise, just replacing impl A for impl B in various places. I just wanted to get opinion on changing the impls to the new ones. Specifically we're talking about:</p>

<li><tt>org.apache.http.conn.ssl.StrictHostnameVerifier</tt> -> <tt>org.apache.http.conn.ssl.DefaultHostnameVerifier</tt></li>
<li><tt>org.apache.http.conn.ssl.BrowserCompatHostnameVerifier</tt> -> <tt>org.apache.http.conn.ssl.DefaultHostnameVerifier</tt> (or really usage goes away entirely, since there's no longer a distinction between "strict" and "browser-compat"; we don't directly use this anywhere anyway, just a constant on a class)</li>
<li><tt>org.apache.http.conn.ssl.AllowAllHostnameVerifier</tt> -> <tt>org.apache.http.conn.ssl.NoopHostnameVerifier</tt></li>
</ul> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">On one hand, the new impls are not based on the old impls, in the sense of deriving from a common base class, etc. So there's a (probably small) risk that there might be (important, likely subtle) differences in behavior. It's not strictly necessary to do the replacement until they go away entirely, presumably in HC 5.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">On the other hand, these are the new impls, and they've been around for a long while. They're the future and we're going to have to switch anyway. It's perhaps better to find out about any issues now rather than later. Last but not least these account for a very large number of the deprecation warnings in the build (esp unit tests) and would be nice to clean that up.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">My $.02 is that, unless we find actual problems (unit tests failing, etc) with the new verifier impls, we should just go ahead and switch to the new ones.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Thoughts?</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0"> </p> </td>
