<ul>
<li>A "normal" patch release <b>must</b> be reversible. If you are at 3.4.5 and need to go back to 3.4.4 then because of the versioning rules you should just be able to apply it. Nothing will have changed. So nothing to save</li>
<li>In order to safely roll back anything else the only real solution is to take a copy of all the folders under <tt>/opt/idp</tt> <b>except</b> system, dist and war (because these belong to the installer). Also jetty-base if you are on windows and doing that thing</li>
<li>This in turn is because an minor or greater release may add files to any of the public slots. So an uninstall needs to be able to remove these files and although installer subsystems (I know the windoze does) allow tracking of this sort of stuff that's seriously not our job. Now, when you roll back the file will be ignored, but when you roll forward again the file will be there so it won't be replaced. This is bad for obvious reasons.</li>
<li>Equally we reserve the right, infeasible thought it may be, to modify the properties file - even just to add properties.</li>
</ul> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So the only <b>safe</b> backup is to copy everything but I feel quite strongly that we shouldn't be taking copies of files with security critical resources in them. In new V4 installs these may/should be inside credentials, but in V3 installes rolled forward they sure and heck won't be.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I therefore content that we can only fix this in the documentation. Further it is my belief that the residual back done by the V4 installer is a chocolate teapot.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Absent someone telling me I'm wrong I'll move this forward sometime after 10 Jan</p> </td>
