Are you actually using that here, and not OpenSAML 3? If so, the OpenSAML 2 stack has been EOL and dead for a few years now. So you'd need to first upgrade to v3. I don't know that the behavior of v3 is going to be much different, but we aren't going to spend anytime on v2 at all at this point. If you are actually using v3, then we can move this issue to the OSJ project for tracking purposes.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Second, I'm honestly not surprised at those numbers when you are talking about an extremely huge batch metadata document like the UK federation. That's why the world is moving from batch metadata to dynamic. The former just doesn't scale. That's why I suspect we are likely not going to want to spend much time optimizing for a use case that's already known to be not viable for the long term.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Lastly, on the actual details you mention: I'm not terribly surprised by the <tt>LazySet</tt> and <tt>LazyMap</tt> numbers. It's a consequence of us deciding software design-wise that for safety most of our classes don't internally use or return null collections, they always default in an empty or lazy collection impl. I don't know exactly where all those are coming from (some portion are from <tt>NamespaceManager</tt>, below), but in a huge <tt>XMLObject</tt> tree based on the UK fed metadata it doesn't sound horribly off.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I'm less sure about the <tt>Namespace</tt> instances, but it's not a matter of their only being 12 namespaces declared. Each <tt>XMLObject</tt> has to track what namespaces are in-scope for it. So each and every DOM element corresponds to an <tt>XMLObject</tt> with its own <tt>NamespaceManager</tt>. This doesn't always come into play, but it is when you dealing with signatures and I'm sure the UK fed metadata is signed and you're probably performing signature validation, which triggers that code.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I'll spend some time thinking about this, but off-hand I'm not optimistic we could dramatically improve the number of instances. I would think the main concern here would be memory, not number of instances per se, and I doubt these classes account for much mem usage, despite the number of instances, since they're individually small. Does your metrics have any numbers of mem usage on the heap by these instances specifically?</p> </td>
