<li>I guess that the idea is to put the stuff that is in the "handler" (effectively <tt>getServiceProvider().doHandler(handler)</tt> code into the method currently called doFilter. That saves some to-and-fro-ing</li>
<li>I would like to remove the <tt>handlerPrefix</tt> stuff in favor of passing the buck to the base classes - but that is based on my ignorance of exactly what they do and how. Part of doing a deep dive will be to understand that.</li>
<li>I have a memory that the stage at which things are called is critical and of course being MS documentation the docs do not help by (as usual) failing to be didactic and rather being either pointlessly prescriptive ("during the wibble-wobble stage you must do <em>something which is entirely irrelevant to the job in hand</em>") or tautologous ("during the wibble-wobble stage the wibble-wobbles are performed"). However as part of a deep dive I can re-learn all this stuff.</li>
<li>From a pure C++ point of view I'm relatively happy that this can all be done in a minor revision (the <tt>doXYZ()</tt> methods are private and the public functions are pure overrides of the (compiled) parent class.</li>
<li>Nonetheless the size of change being mooted here would make me nervous for a patch release. Obviously this is not my call, but this feels like something to provoke a 3.1.</li>
