</div> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0"> </p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">The 'else' case is the normal case and that part is fine.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Because of the other processing happening before this, the only way you can get into the first part of the block is 1) the metadata is expired and 2) you've indicated you don't care because <tt>requireValidMetadata</tt> is false (it of course default to true). (Also meaning the method is somewhat misnamed vis-a-vis this edge case.)</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Assuming the use of <tt>getMaxRefreshDelay()</tt> there isn't a typo or mistake, I <b>think</b> the rationale for this is probably that if the metadata is expired and that's ok, then you want to minimize the frequency of refreshing. I'm not sure I agree with that 100%. One could argue the exact opposite: That if metadata is expired, you should try to get fresher data as soon as possible. I guess it depends on why you think a metadata source would be expired in the first place, and whether it's an aberration or "normal".</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">That code has been there since way back in v2, so I'm reluctant to change it now in a patch.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Since that logic does apply when loading from the <tt>FileBacked-</tt> backing file as well as the main fetch, it does apply here for the reasons of this case. If the backup file is expired and <tt>requireValidMetadata</tt> is false, then you won't do the post-init background fetch for <tt>maxRefreshDelay</tt>, which defaults to 4 hrs. If the rationale above is correct, then I guess that really would be the intent. Note that unlike the original case here, the expired metadata from the backing file <b>is</b> loaded and usable, so this is really just about when you attempt to refresh it.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Practically speaking this probably isn't really an issue for hardly anyone, since running in production with <tt>requireValidMetadata</tt> = false is crazy.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So unless there are strong opinions about changing it now, I'll leave it and we could consider for a future release.</p> </td>
