<td class="text-paragraph-pattern-container mobile-resize-text " style="padding: 0px; border-collapse: collapse; padding: 0 0 10px 0"> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0; margin-top: 0">I think there's 2 different things here: 1) the actual overall behavior of the metadata provider 2) the logging text</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">On the behavior: If the provider <tt>initializeFromBackupFile</tt> param is <tt>true</tt> (as it is by default), then the provider loads the backing file immediately in the foreground thread, and then schedules a refresh in the very near future from the remote URL, with that refresh interval determined by the param <tt>backupFileInitNextRefreshDelay</tt>, which defaults to 5 seconds.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">In the case where the backing file is invalid, unless there are bugs we don't know about, that's not going to change anything: 5 seconds after the unsuccessful attempt to load the backing file, the remote URL refresh will trigger and you'll get new metadata. (That's assuming the remote URL is accessible and its metadata is valid. If it's not, then it will try again at some point in the future per other config params, but there's nothing else we could do there.)</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So I think in practical terms it <b>does</b> download fresh metadata from the URL, albeit 5 seconds later rather than immediately.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">On the logging text: I can see how the phrase "<em>..., existing metadata retained</em>" could be misinterpreted . On an init there is no existing metadata to retain. However, given the layering of the software and that this processing is happening in an abstract base class, it's not terribly easy to conditionalize the message. It's probably possible, but I don't know if it's worth it. I imagine it's intuitive to most people that on init "existing" means an empty data set.</p> </td>
