With it, Apache does not appear to leak file handles, with a patched log4shib.</cite></p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">I would hazard that</p>

<li>Adding <tt>Category::shutdownForced()</tt> to log4shib</li>
<li>Adding a call to <tt>xmltooling::XMLToolingConfig::getConfig().log_config(...)</tt></li>
</ul> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Might do "something". Further that "something" would work some of the time. But...</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">Although there is a veil of psuedo-thread safety in the <tt>Appender::_deleteAllAppenders()</tt> code in that the iteration is done under a mutex, but the tearing down is just done with a delete, not a counted pointer (I know that boost and probable std:: has one of these). So if there is some logging going on in another thread when we reload the configuration then Apache will crash, whereas what we want to do is for the delete to be deferred until the Apache thread is done with it.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">So I am enlightened, but not completely sold on this idea. Further I am loth to make these changes without understanding the code a great deal more than I do after an afternoion spelunking. I'm very leery of Scott's comment omn <a href="https://issues.shibboleth.net/jira/browse/SSPCPP-550" title="Problems with native.log file rotation" class="issue-link" data-issue-key="SSPCPP-550" style="color: #3b73af; text-decoration: none"><del>SSPCPP-550</del></a> </p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0"><cite style="font-style: italic">That won't fix appenders attached below the root, but that's much less common, and trying to plug them all means more code changes to horrible code I didn't write, risking more bugs</cite></p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">is worth thinking about.</p> <p style="margin: 10px 0 0 0">AIUI there is a move to use syslog as the supported output on Linux anyway?
