<li>java.xml.ws.annotation — The subset of the JSR-250 Common Annotations defined by Java SE to support web services</li>
</ul> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">To the extent that we use or have indirect references to any of the classes included in those modules, it will not function under Java 11. As Java 11 is the next LTS release of the Java platform, I believe it's safe to say that we will want to avoid that outcome.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">I believe it's possible to do this by adding appropriate Maven dependencies to implementations of (some of) these APIs to the classpath.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">We will need to add these new managed dependencies to the parent projects prior to IdP V3.4 shipping, so that V3.4 will work in a Java 11 environment. We can test that by disabling those modules in a Java 9 or Java 10 environment.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">At the moment, we support Java 9 (and soon Java 10) as a testing environment by use of a profile <tt>jdk9-surefire-modules</tt> which tweaks the behaviour of the Maven <tt>surefire-plugin</tt>.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">By default, <tt>surefire-plugin</tt> version 2.20.1 performs the equivalent of <tt>-<del>add-module java.se.ee</del></tt> to re-enable these modules, which are all enabled by default. Our profile changes this to <tt>-add-module java.xml.bind</tt> to avoid some clashes between the classpath and module path, while still allowing <tt>java.xml.bind</tt> to be available.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">This needs to be revised so that the profile performs <tt>--add-module java.base</tt> (effectively disabling the plugin's erroneous default behaviour in 2.20.1). We need to add managed versions of the Maven artifacts for appropriate ex-modules, and add them to the dependencies of our modules where appropriate. This <em>should</em> then work under all versions of Java that we support (Java 7+).</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">In my preliminary research for this issue, I validated the approach with Java 8 vs. Java 9 for the <tt>java-opensaml</tt> product, which appears to have indirect dependencies on a couple of these modules for tests only. We should obviously check the entire stack before concluding that it will work, however.</p> <p style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:10px;; margin: 10px 0 0 0">Also note that <tt>surefire-plugin</tt> version 2.21 is on the cards soon (indeed was originally supposed to have been released already, on 2018-02-21) and as it will probably change the default behaviour it will probably be best to hold until that is available and has been integrated.</p> </td>
